The Build Process

Our Custom Home Building Process.

Building a custom home should be exciting, not stressful. Here is how we guide Spokane families from the first conversation to the day you get the keys.

01

Initial Consultation

We sit down with you to understand your vision, budget, timeline, and non-negotiables. No pressure, no canned pitch — just a real conversation about the home you want to build.

02

Design & Planning

We work with you and your architect, or refer one of our trusted design partners, to refine floor plans, finishes, and site placement. Every decision is documented so there are no surprises later.

03

Transparent Budgeting

You receive specifications with budgets before we break ground based on what matters most to you.

04

Permitting & Site Prep

We handle all Spokane County and City of Spokane permitting, utility coordination, and site preparation so you can focus on the build itself.

05

Construction

Clay and George are on site regularly, overseeing every phase. You receive consistent progress updates and have a single point of contact for every question — the people whose names are on the company.

06

Walkthrough & Handoff

Before you move in, we walk the entire home with you, addressing every detail. Our relationship does not end at closing — we stand behind our homes long after the keys are handed over.

Ask Anything

Questions Worth Asking Every Builder You Interview.

How do I know you're actually qualified?

Washington State has no pre-qualification program for contractors. Our answer: 60+ combined years of union journeyman experience, green certification, License JOHNSBC114P4 on the WA L&I site, and 35+ years of completed homes in Spokane. Ask us anything. Visit our past builds. Talk to our homeowners.

Are you hands-on or will I work with a project manager I've never met?

Clay or George is at your framing inspection. One of us is the person your electrician calls when something doesn't add up. We don't delegate the relationship — because the relationship is our passion.

Can you build the style of home I have in mind?

We've built custom homes across every style the Inland Northwest asks for — craftsman, contemporary, traditional, and energy-efficient. Bring your ideas, your lot, and your inspiration. We'll tell you honestly what works and why.

What's included and what's the realistic timeline?

You receive a detailed, line-item budget before we break ground. Typical builds run 9–14 months from groundbreaking to move-in. We give you a realistic timeline upfront — not a sales pitch — and we keep you informed throughout.

Testimonials

What Our Clients Say.

"Clay and George were great to work with. They listened to our needs but added their own thoughts and experiences every time we asked for their input. They have great subcontractors that were overall professional and showed pride in their work. All in all we were impressed with our home and would easily refer them to our friends and family if they were looking to build a custom home!"

— Carrie Gillespie Larsen

"Our need for a builder came quite by accident. We originally built the house and then lost it to a wildfire several years later. Clay and George fully exceeded our expectations, from our first meeting to the day we moved back in. They brought a new level of craftsmanship, creativity and attention to detail that improved the house in ways we could not have imagined. The fire may have taken our home, but Clay and George Johnson gave it back to us."

— Bob and Sherry Maughan

"Working with Johnson Brothers made our entire building process a joy. We were kept well informed throughout the entire building process and questions and concerns were answered promptly and professionally. They are builders of the highest quality and the highest integrity. We are grateful for the personal care and attention we received."

— Gene & Yvonne Teigen

"I would recommend Johnson Brothers to anyone. They not only built us a beautiful home but they were so accommodating and good to work with."
